The Blog

My wife and I are in the fairly drawn-out process of leaving Australia to settle in New Zealand. I say “drawn out” because we agreed in November 2007 that it was a good idea … and it’s now late 2010 and we’re still here. We weren’t in a hurry, but now it’s all starting to come together. There’s so many complexities, so many stories that arise when you decide to leave your home, your friends and family; even if the country of your choice is only a relatively short flight away. I’m going to try to capture some of the events, the feelings and challenges as we face them. It might be interesting to you … and later, it might be interesting to me, too.

Your Host

It’s hard to know what to tell and what to leave out.

I’m your host, Adam Dennis, currently living in central Victoria, Australia, with my wife and two dogs. Micah – featured at the top of this site – is more than five years old now. She shares her obsession with a small rubber tyre with Tali, another border collie who is still getting used to his first time on earth.

We all live together in a late 70′s kit home, constructed mainly of pine. Pine floors, pine walls, pine ceiling. It used to have split pine logs on the outside but around the time of the big fires we replaced them with fine corrugated iron. The house is in a permanent state of renovation, with two or three projects unfinished at any time. In the next few months I’m going to have to complete everything, because we’re planning to hang up the big For Sale sign at the start of Spring. That’s September, for you arse-about Northerners.

When not renovating or planning our big move, I run our IT consultancy. We specialise in Web, but actually do a wide range of work. Visit our company site here, if you must.

I’m also a musician. Having released a couple of CDs with my band The Jordans Play, I’m now working on the third album which will most likely be an online-only release. That’s the future for you! Visit our website here to download some tracks.

The Tales

I like writing short stories. I’d like to finish my novel too, but realistically that won’t happen in the next couple of years. In the meantime, Tales from Pausing For Breath gives me an opportunity to share my work with you in spoken word form. There’s a few up already, and more on the way when I get a bit of time.

The Podcast Archive

When I established Pausing For Breath years ago it was an opportunity for me to create podcasts. I indulged my opinionated self, rambled on about things that interest me, and found that some kind-hearted souls took pity on me and subscribed. In some cases it was friends of mine who listened on their iPods on the way to work so they’d know what I was up to.

Eventually I discovered that creating the show to the quality I wanted was taking far too much time out of my life. I work lots of hours and volunteer for a bunch of things, and when it ended up that I was getting stressed and staying up until 3am to do a show … well, logic finally intervened. You can listen to the archived shows, but I’m not planning to do any new ones in the near future.
